Lukesland Gardens recover from extreme weather in 2012

In July, November and December 2012 unusually heavy rain turned Lukesland’s quiet Addicombe Brook into a ferocious torrent which caused serious damage along its course. The worst flood was in July when two bridges were wrecked and one of the 2 large waterfalls completely destroyed. The popular Dipper Boy statue, 75 years old, was also washed away but later, fortunately, recovered. In addition, great lengths of bank and path all along the Brook were scoured out and huge amounts of debris and silt deposited through the garden.

The Howell family tidied up the worst of the damage in time for the Autumn openings 2012. However, in November and again in December further flooding undid much of the repair work. In January 2013 flood protection measures were undertaken to prevent further damage. Visitors will notice new walls around the Old Pond and in the stream and the great improvements that have been made to the paths.

In 2013 the gardens are opening later than usual to allow time for further repair work.  Look out for new additions and improvements, including the beautiful new gazebo with its wonderful view across the valley to the house.
